Bogota, NJ

Bogota NJ

Established in 1894.  Located on the east shore of the Hackensack River, Bogota was formed from parts of Ridgefield Township.  It was known for its paper mills near the river, The Bogota Water & Light Co. *Which furnished no light*, The Riverside Planning Mill, and The Bogota Paper Company.  In April 1898, The Bergen traction company was granted a franchise to run a trolley up to River Road.  This trolley connected them with Leonia, Englewood, Fort lee and the 125th St Ferry. Therefore, both young and old, from New York City, took advantage of the new way to explore the neighborhood.  Historians believe the borough was named in honor of two early families, a combination of the names of the Bogert and Banta families, who once owned much of what Bogota is today. Famous landmarks include the Bogert House and Olsen Park.
