The borough was officially formed on October 25, 1894 and was named after the Bridge Lodi in Lombardy, Italy. Today, Lodi is a community that offers its residents a convenient location, a strong school system and family-friendly events throughout the year. This is a family friendly town offering many festivals and is known as " a neighborly community”, residents enjoy the borough’s small town feel and sense of community involvement.

Lodi was incorporated as a borough on December 22, 1894, from portions of the now-defunct municipalities of Lodi Township and Saddle River Township, at the height of Bergen County's "Boroughitis" phenomenon then sweeping through the County, based on the results of a referendum held on the previous day.
