The borough of River Edge offers a convenient location, an interesting history and a numerous transportation options that take commuters to New York City and beyond. It as a population of approximately 11,000 residents. There are a variety of homes for sale, good schools and close proximity to all that Bergen County has to offer, real estate in River Edge attracts buyers from around the region.

River Edge residents enjoy a variety of public transportation options. There are two separate train stations located in town, both of which are on New Jersey Transit’s Pascack Valley Line. Residents can access New York City, as well as the rest of the State of New Jersey from these lines.

There are two primary schools in the River Edge Elementary School District. Roosevelt School and Cherry Hill School serve students in Kindergarten through sixth grade. Students in grades seven through twelve attend schools in the River Dell Regional School District, a shared district with neighboring Oradell.

With a convenient location, an interesting history and a good school system, real estate in River Edge attracts a variety of buyers from around the state.

Riverside was incorporated as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on June 30, 1894, as the Borough of Riverside from portions of Midland Township, at the height of the "Boroughitis" phenomenon then sweeping through Bergen County, based on the results of a referendum held the previous day. On December 1, 1930, the borough's name was changed to River Edge.

Formerly comprised of farmland, River Edge has expanded along the main thoroughfare of Kinderkamack Road, where these is a mix of residential and commercial properties. Otherwise, the town, which has an area of 1.9 square miles, is predominantly composed of single family homes.

Plans for a booming downtown area are in the works, with several redevelopment projects expected to be completed in the next several years. In cooperation with NJ Transit, the borough is looking to create a transit village that will incorporate the railroad system and historic New Bridge Landing.

New Bridge Landing, located near the Hackensack River, is also home to the Campbell-Christie House and Steuben House. A museum has been proposed at New Bridge Landing to showcase historic artifacts.

HISTORY

Cornelius Matthew, a Swedish land-clearer, made the first European settlement about 1683 at the narrows of the Hackensack River in the vicinity of the Steuben House. This area was known as Tantaqua’s Plain or Aschatking (meaning “at the narrows, where the hill comes close to the river.”)

River crossings were built at the gristmill hamlets of Old Bridge (by the present River Edge train station) in 1724 and at New Bridge in 1745. Early deeds mention the “path to Kindockameck.”

Considerable military activity occurred in River Edge throughout the Revolution. Surprised by British invasion on November 20, 1776, General Washington led the retreating garrison from Fort Lee across the New Bridge to safety, inspiring Thomas Paine’s memorable refrain, “These are the times that try men’s souls.” On June 29, 1894, by vote of 37 to 3, citizens of River Edge and Cherry Hill approved incorporation of the new borough of Riverside. The borough name changed to River Edge in 1930. The present Borough Hall opened in 1941.
