The Saddle River Public School District is considered excellent. Children in kindergarten through grade five attend the Wandell School. Students in grades six through eight attend the Eric S. Smith Middle School, which is located in Ramsey, New Jersey and is part of a sending/receiving relationship Saddle River has with that town. High School students choose to attend either Northern Highlands Regional High School or Ramsey High School, which are both also part of a sending/receiving relationship. With a large variety of homes for sale and a high quality of life, not to mention the town's close proximity to New York City, it is not surprising that Saddle River real estate attracts a large variety of buyers from around the state.

Saddle River was incorporated as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on November 22, 1894, from portions of Orvil Township, based on the results of a referendum held three days earlier, at the height of the Boroughitis phenomenon sweeping through Bergen County at the time. The borough is named after the Saddle River, which flows through the borough and is a tributary of the Passaic River.
